Planning

Plan your book in an afternoon

A simple way to turn a vague idea into a chapter plan you can actually write from.

Start with one sentence that names the reader, the promise and the change. Write it down before anything else.\n\nNext, list the five to ten moments or lessons that must appear. Do not worry about order yet; worry about whether each one earns its place.\n\nOrder them so each one raises a question the next one answers. That question-and-answer chain is what keeps a reader turning pages, in fiction and non-fiction alike.\n\nFinally, give every chapter a target word count. A short book of 8,000 words across eight chapters is a thousand words each — an achievable unit of work, and an achievable unit of editing.
